The Selectboard is seeking to fill several vacancies on the Municipal Golf Commission, the committee charged with advising the General Manager, the Selectboard and other town officials about matters regarding the Ledges Golf Course.
The Ledges Golf Course is a town-owned property purchased from James River Corporation in 1997 and developed as a golf course with the help of Urban Self-Help Grants from the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs. Since it’s opening in 2001, the Selectboard has held the goal of running the course as a self-sustaining operation that does not need taxpayer subsidy, and in two consecutive years – FY 2009 and FY 2010 – revenue from golf fees exceeded operating expenses. With the down-turn in the economy and related slump in golfing across the state, the Selectboard has explored different options for future management of the course, including the possibility of contracting with an outside vendor to take over golf course operations. However, the town has recently experienced success operating the course in-house with its own
General Manager and is in the process of hiring a Food and Beverage Manager to handle on-site concessions.
Golf Commission areas of review include general operations, policies, capital purchases, finances and overall management. The board also promotes golfing programs and other recreational activities deemed in the best interests of the town. Per town bylaws, the Board consists of seven regular members and two associate members. Due to 2012 resignations, there are presently openings for one regular and two associate members.
The Golf Commission has an important role in advising the Town as it continues to work towards its goal of a successful golf enterprise. If you are interested in being appointed to the Golf Commission, please fill out an on-line application on the town’s website here or send a letter of interest to the Selectboard at 116 Main Street, South Hadley, MA 01075 or by e-mail to selectboard@southhadleyma.gov. Letters will be accepted until all positions are filled.
