I have read that I can compost my yard waste and kitchen scraps and will no longer have to throw them out as trash.  How do I do this?
Find out about
composting in South Hadley and how you can help reduce solid waste while making a great amendment for your garden.

The Town of South Hadley sponsors the Adopt An Island beautification program.
This program provides an opportunity for companies, civic groups, schools, and institutions to “adopt” a traffic island or public space to beautify and maintain throughout the summer and fall to show pride in your neighborhood.  You might have noticed how beautiful the 13 adopted spaces around town looked last summer thanks to many dedicated groups of volunteers. We are doing this in the Spring, so if you are interested in Adopting an Island, request an application package from Department of Public Works, 10 Industrial Drive, South Hadley, MA 01075.

As part of the submission, applicants will be asked to provide a detailed description and/or layout of the plantings or decorations planned for the public space.   The assignment of spaces will be on a first come, first serve basis, with participants from last year given first option on re-adopting their same space for next year.  The list of potential sites is included with the application package.  Sponsors plant and maintain their public space through the first frost in October. Sponsors must agree to closely monitor their public space throughout the year for weeds and the need for any clean up.  Any plantings that die must be replaced.  Planting areas must be weeded and all debris removed at the end of the season. Sponsors are responsible for watering their space.  The Town will provide a small sign for the public space identifying the program and the sponsor.
