Check Your Paint Container
What to Do
Latex paint
If liquid, dry out by mixing with kitty litter until it is the consistency of oatmeal, or air dry and then place in trash
Oil based paint and paint products
Save for Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Day
Not in original container, probably oil paint or thinner
Save for HHW Day
Paint has been frozen or is dried out.
(Frozen paint has separated lines / cracks, looks like cottage cheese, and may smell bad.)
If latex and dried out completely, may be placed in trash, If oil-based, save for HHW day
Aerosol paint or paint product
Save for HHW day
Read the label-does it contain any of the following:
  • Creosote 
  • Lead, mercury, chromium
  • Methyl ethyl ketone
  • Pentachlorophenol
  • Pesticide / fungicide
  • Toluene
  • Wood bleach
  • Xylene
Save for HHW day
Is it 1 of the following:
  • Epoxy
  • Fire retardant
  • Pool paint
  • Rubber based
  • Two-part paint
Save for HHW day
