[ARCHIVED] Pertussis Information

pertussis_in_1_e

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Throughout the state there has been an increase in cases of Pertussis. This letter is to advise you that there

have been recent cases of whooping cough (Pertussis) within our town.

We are remaining proactive by notifying families in our community and we ask that you be aware of the

signs and symptoms of this infection.

Pertussis is a disease caused by bacteria that spreads from person to person with close contact, usually

from coughing or sneezing. Pertussis is often mild in older children and adults but can cause serious

problems in infants. It usually begins with cold-like symptoms; with a runny nose, sneezing and a dry

cough. The cough can last for a week or two and then slowly gets worse. The coughing spells get worse

and can get uncontrollable at times and can sometimes be followed by vomiting.

At this point in time, we are recommending that any child who has had a continued duration of

coughing is evaluated by their pediatrician.

If positive for Pertussis, a laboratory result will be forwarded to the South Hadley Board of Health and

the Regional Public Health Nurse will call the caregiver for follow-up.

Once again, we would like you and your family to remain healthy. Please schedule an appointment with

your child’s pediatrician to ensure they are fully up to date on their vaccinations.

Vaccines provide significant protection from preventable diseases and is the best line of defense.

You can check your child's vaccination record by visiting https://myvaxrecords.mass.gov/".
