[ARCHIVED] Volunteers sought for Buttery Brook Stream Team Assessment

SOUTH HADLEY – Volunteers are needed to participate in a visual assessment of Buttery Brook in the town of South Hadley.

The purpose of the assessment is to gather information about the health of the stream and identify areas in need of cleanup or restoration. People interested in becoming a Stream Team volunteer should contact the South Hadley Planning and Conservation Department at (413) 538-5017 x208 or conservation@southhadleyma.gov.

The stream assessment will be conducted at the end of August. Volunteers will receive training in how to conduct a stream survey, as well as technical support during the stream surveys, from the Connecticut River Conservancy. The Connecticut River Conservancy is a non-profit organization whose mission is to protect and advocate for our rivers while educating and engaging communities on ways to prevent pollution, improve habitat and enjoy the river. Healthy rivers support healthy economies.

Buttery Brook is located in the southwestern corner of South Hadley, within the most urbanized part of town. It joins the Connecticut River in South Hadley Falls, on the south side of the Route 116 Veterans Memorial Bridge. Segments of the brook are culverted, and E. coli bacteria has been identified along the stream corridor in past sampling rounds.
